The Char Dham Yatra is a very important Hindu yatra in India. It takes you to four temples in the Himalayan mountains of Uttarakhand. These temples are Yamunotri, Gangotri, Kedarnath, Badrinath. People believe that visiting these four places washes away sins and helps a person reach moksha. The best time to do Char Dham Yatra is from May to October. During winters, all four temples are closed due to heavy snowfall.
The journey begins from Yamunotri, the source of River Yamuna, where the temple is dedicated to Goddess Yamuna. Next is Gangotri, the origin of the River Ganga, where Goddess Ganga is worshipped. After that comes Kedarnath, a temple of Lord Shiva and one of the 12 Jyotirlingas. It is located at a high altitude and requires a 16 km trek from Gaurikund (or can be reached by helicopter). Lastly, the yatra ends at Badrinath, a temple of Lord Vishnu, surrounded by snow covered mountains and the Alaknanda River.
